with sample materials for an original media product to a client brief.
Learning Outcome 2 (U21): Be able to create a proposal and pitch for an original media product based on
a given brief
I have been asked by the client to create a proposal and to include sample materials:
Title:
The title of my magazine is ''Connect''. I have chosen this name because I want my readers to 'connect' with my magazine and be able to relate to some of the artists experiences. The work 'connect' has many connotations such as connecting people to each other and connecting individuals to the music world. The aim of my title is for people to be able to relate to the music industry and feel connected within the community. I want readers to be able to interpret the title as they wish and fell as if their part of a connected music world.
Purpose:
The purpose of my magazine is to appeal to the teenagers living in North London and promote artists and venues all in one magazine. I feel there is a gap in the market for a magazine that does both interviews with artists themselves and reviews of the venues they perform at. I will be advertising my magazine digitally and hardcopy's will be handed out, this means I will be able to reach a wider target audience as the magazine will be available for both the younger hi-tech generation as well as the typical 'cool dads'. My magazine will contain a QR code which enables individuals to scan using their phone and will allow to the get the magazine on their phone.
I want my magazine to entertain and inform readers of the different styles out their and educate them on the reasons behind them becoming an artist.
I want to entertain my audience by keeping them updated with upcoming concerts and artists realising new songs and albums. From my research I found out that people aren't interested in the gossip of artists their more interested in how they became an artists and what motivated them to continue. Within my magazine their will also be a chance to promote upcoming/new artists. This will help with the advertising of the magazine as well as promoting new artists. This will engage and educate readers as there going to want to discover new artists and new music.
My USP will be discounted tickets to students and regular visitors to the location. My magazine will contain a QR code which enables individuals to scan using their phone and will allow to the get the magazine on their phone. As my USP is appealing to a specific generation, I will be offering as well as student discount, if they download the app they will be able to skip the queue and get priority tickets. This will appeal to more people and hopefully increase the revenue of the venues, which enable my magazine to succeed.
Form:
My magazine will be in print form as well as online. The online will feature more interactive characteristics such as, videos, and questionnaires on each venue to get the public involved and engaged. This would increase my magazines revenue as in order for them to access the magazine online and be entered in competitions they will need to have a monthly subscription. It will be accessible all around the world therefore appealing to a wider target audience.
The normal size of a magazine is 8 3/8 x 10 7/8 and therefore my magazine will roughly be the same. This will ensure when it comes to print my magazine I wont have trouble finding a printer that will print my size as its the average. My magazine will have between 100-130 pages and my articles will be printed on recycled paper to ensure that it is eco friendly.
The magazine will release 30-50 thousand issues a month, and the magazine will include exclusive interviews with artists who perform in North London as well as a review and interview of the venue itself as well as the owner. It will include pictures and chances to win prizes such as back stage, free drinks, skip the queue etc. The readers will get a chance to be entered into a prize draw to win the prizes when they sign up with their monthly subscription which will cost £45.00.
The price of my magazine will be £5.00, and will be sold in local news agents around North London and will be handed out outside London's most popular stations. To advertise my magazine I will have Billboards and fliers being handed out.
Genre:
I haven't chosen a specific genre to due to my magazine promoting venues and the different style of artists who perform at these venues. However, each month will consist of a different theme/genre so I am appealing to all audiences. I have chosen to do it this way because I am representing different styles. Some of the genres in intend to write about is pop, grime and rock. I have researched that these are very popular genres and are mostly performed in North London venues.
Content:
*Disclaimer supposed to be in black*
My magazine is going to be both an online and print form. The content of my magazine will be the same, however the front cover will feature whats going to be in the magazine as a whole where as the double page spread is just containing a specific topic. The online version will feature more interactive links and games to play, as this will link directly to the venue itself or the artist. The online version will also feature videos from interviews conducted with the the artists who perform at these venues and the venue owners themselves.
The print copy will feature professional photos of the location and added bonuses within the venue. It will feature detailed articles about the previous and up-coming performances. The whole idea of my magazine is to promote new artists and small venues so my magazine will contain a whole page on new soon to be big venues. Part of my magazine will be a Q & A where I will be answering the the questions that the readers have previously asked. The print magazine will have constant ads through the magazine linking to near by venues, these are offered perks to interest the readers and make them feel as if their getting something from the magazine.
I have chosen to do both print and online form as this generation everything is online and to be able to read a magazine online has become even more easier. There are still many people who prefer print, therefore offering both styles ensures i am reaching a wider target audience and appealing to more readers.
The client brief states that we must "pitch ideas for producing a new online and print based music magazine for North London". The content of my magazine will achieve this by promoting venues and artists based and who perform in North London.
Target Audience:
My primary target audience for this magazine is both genders aged between 18-25. I have chosen this target audience because I am basing my magazine on students who have just finished colleague and are thinking about going to university. I have chosen this target audience because i have researched the 'typical' type of people who attend concerts and they all seem to be about this age, this is due to tickets being reasonable and location is key. Their class is middle age/working class B/C1 as they will need to be able to afford tickets, however due to the location the ticket price may vary and appeal to a different social class.
My second target audience is men aged between 25-35. I have chosen this to target this age range because their starting to go into adult life but still want to have fun and enjoy the things they did as a youth such as attend concerts. My research has shown that as you get older your taste and style of music changer therefore by targeting an age where there starting to find their chosen genre will help improve the income of my magazine. In relation to the demographic table my magazine falls under the C1/C2 category.
For the purpose of the front cover and double page spread I will be undertaking these roles my self apart form the model.
As my budget for the magazine is quite low, I will asking for interns to fill these positions as there are a wide variety of individuals looking for working experience, therefore they will be inclined to work for free or at a low cost. I will be offering an apprenticeship that will last 2-3 years at the end of it they may be offered a full time job if they are needed.
Marketing methods:
As I have a primary and secondly target audience, I will be using a range of marketing methods to reach everyone. My primary target audience is females aged between 18-25. I targeted this age group because they are the face of social media, and social media is one of the easiest ways to target everyone and promote a magazine. I will do this by paying to have an advertisement page in order to promote my magazine. Social media can be accessed by so many people across the world therefore of a productive social platform. As well as it being easily accessible it is also cheap, and can cost as little as nothing. I will also be doing a mailing list where the individuals give me their email address or a link to their social media page where I will be able to share it with them and hope they share it on. The social media page will contain a link to the magazine website which will include a subscription section to sign up for monthly copy's.
My secondary target audience will benefit from me actually going to events and handing out hard copy leaflets such as filers. I will be doing this by finding individuals and asking them to go open mic nights and hand out the filers. Another way I could go about handing out leaflets is by when people are queuing I can give them a filer to read as they wait, this a productive way to market my magazine I am targeting the people who attend the venues and are interested in the type of music I am creating a magazine about.
I have chosen to market my magazine in these two ways because their easy ways to target the audience, whilst keeping the price low and target a wide range of individuals. I have chosen thai way because it's cheap and reliable as well as quick and easy. By using social media platforms I am targeting a wide audience as all marketing is mainly done online. As my main source of marketing is quite cheap with the money I have left over I will invest that into buying ad space into magazines to promote mine.
Distribution:
The people who sign up to receive their monthly copy online will be alerted via their chosen way (email, text or notification via the app). They will be alerted a week before and a week after incase they lost track of time. This will only be provided for customers who have already signed up and payed their fees.
I have chosen to distribute my magazine in this way because it is a cost effective way and time friendly way to promote a magazine. By choosing to promote it in these locations means I am targeting my audience in the easiest way possible for them. When individuals subscribe for the online edition of the magazine they will have to sign up using their email, therefore I can use their email to add it to a mailing to send the magazine via there email.
Magazines in competition:
A big competition for my magazine is 'The Big Issue'. This is a magazine based on venues around London. The big issue is different because it gives homeless people something to do during the day as well as earn money. This is competition because it's advertising local music venues at a cheaper rate however it offers very limited information.

Another magazine which could potentially be competition is 'Time out'. Time out is a global magazine offering detailed information of local markets, music festivals and performances. It offers information of a variety of different concerts and styles of music however focuses on globally not just North London. This is competition to my magazine because it includes information on music performances and artists performing however, doesn't go into as much detail as 'Connect' does.
Font ideas:
I have chosen this font (lemon/milk) for my sub-titles as its bold and will stand out agains my background pictures. This font has many connotations to why I chose this font is that it is simplistic and easy to read. This links to my target audience because because it stands out and can easily be spotted.
I have chosen this font for my tittle because it links well with the idea behind my title as, all the lines eventually connect. Connotations linked to why I chose this font is because it is an alternative looking ,quirky font which links to the alternative venues/genres the magazine will be promoting. This links to my target audience because
I have chosen this font for my double page spread articles because it is easy to read but still stands out. It fits with the theme of my magazine and double page spread as I want it to be elegant and quirky. It connects with my target audience as it's still got a fun side to it. It's not to bold, therefore readers will find it easier to read.
Mood board:

·
I have chosen to create my mood board like this because, I am capturing what it's like to be in a North London venue and how similar they really are. I have included pictures of a range of different venues, as well as the type of people/crowd who attend the concerts. I have also included pictures of light as this sis showing what it's really like to attend a concert.
Sketched Layouts:
Article ideas:
In order to meet the client requirements I have come up with some article ideas.
My articles will all be related to the monthly theme of the magazine which this month is 'open mic nights'. My articles will contain fact files on the artists followed by previous Q & A that the readers would have submitted in previous issues. As well as having fact flies their will be articles written by the artists themselves, or in some cases the owners of the venues telling their story behind the venue. Included in the interview with the venue owner will be a section for the readers to get to ask question about the owner or the venue it-self.
Another Article will contain the headliners for the forthcoming weeks, and this will include who's performing, the style of music they perform and each artist will have a fact file and picture.
As my magazine is promoting venues their will be articles dedicated to the venue history.
Their will be reviews of last months acts..
