Generating ideas (P1, M1, U21)

Learning Outcome 1 (U21):  Be able to generate ideas for an original media product based on a client brief

The brief includes several client requirements:

I have been asked by the client to create a North London music magazine front page and double page spread that promotes artists and showcases the vibrant music scene developing locally. I have analysed the brief and broken into 3 requirements:

The explicit requirements are:

- it needs a front cover
- a double page-spread
- to plan and deliver a pitch
- online
- print-based

The open to interpretation requirements are:

- the style of the magazine
- the layout of the magazine
- produce original content

The implicit requirements are:

- post-production stage
- reflect the vibrant music scene

My first ideas:

One of my first initial ideas is to create a genre based magazine that will promote different artists who sing in the same way. My double page spread will be an interview that promotes different songs for my target audience.

My second first idea was to create a magazine based on artists and how their journey began/ended. I will be writing reviews on the artists and will be conducting a Q & A in order to get as much information possible. It will include a variety of different style of artists.

My third and final idea was to create a magazine based on venues. I will be taking the time to research a wide range of venues and sussing out the type of people who go their and the artists that perform their. My double page spread will be an interview of the artists and an interview of the location picking out the pros and cons.

Three key ideas:

I have been asked by the client to create a North London based magazine cover and a double page spread. I have come up with 3 ideas.

My first idea is a Pop based magazine educating individuals on different styles of the genre which appeal to a wide range of audiences. I have focused mainly on Pop as it's one I have researched the most and know a lot about. I have researched a wide range of pop artists in order to gather information on the kind of age of the readers of the magazine and who they are. My primary target audience is white girls aged between 12-18. Their class is middle age/ working class as they will need to be able to afford tickets, however due to the location they ticket price may vary and appeal to a different social class. My second target audience is white females aged between 15-30. In relation to the demographic table my magazine falls under the B/C1 category. Their starting to go into adult life but still want to have fun and enjoy the things they did as a youth. I chosen to price my magazine at £2.50 an issue because I have researched what the average price of a weekly magazine is and based my price of of that.

Strengths and Weaknesses:

My second idea is an artist based magazine and a double page spread. The idea is to promote unknown artists and make them known. I will be doing this by interviewing them and seeing how they connect to the music world. I will be travelling to different venues in order to view a range of individuals. I have focused on artists because their are so many different styles of musics and I want to be able to represent them. I have researched the most popular artists and their style of music is pop and hip-hop, therefore I will want to discover other types of music such as rock and grime to be able to gather a clear understanding of the world behind the artist. My primary target audience is white girls aged between 16-18. Their class is middle age/ working class as they will need to be able to afford tickets, however due to the location they ticket price may vary and appeal to a different social class. My second target audience is a male aged between 18-30. In relation to the demographic table my magazine falls under the C1/C2 category. Their starting to go into adult life but still want to have fun and enjoy the things they did as a youth. I chosen to price my magazine at £3.00 an issue because I have researched what the average price of a weekly magazine is and based my price of of that.

Strengths and Weaknesses:

My third and final idea is venues. I will be focusing on open mic nights. It will be a weekly magazine as an open mic night will be a weekly occurrence. The whole idea is to get a range of individuals to sign up to the event, as this will give them a chance to develop the talent. In my magazine I will be interviewing them in order to build up a profile to include in my article. I will be conducting a Q & A in order to gather all the information. After the performance I will be reviewing the performance and comparing it to other nights. This will keep my readers engaged as they would want to know how they compare to last months people. It will be free entry for everyone as I wan tot appeal to a wide target audience and let them enjoy the night. I will want my readers to feel connected with my magazine so I will be offering monthly subscriptions at a discount as this will appeal to certain individuals. Students will have half price, and their will be chances to meet the artists and conduct their own interviews as well as publish it in my magazine. My primary target audience is both genders aged between 18-25. Their class is middle age/working class as they will need to be able to afford tickets, however due to the location the ticket price may vary and appeal to a different social class. I have based my target audience on individuals who are at the stage of leaving school. My second target audience is a male aged between 25-35. In relation to the demographic table my magazine falls under the C1/C2 category. Their starting to go into adult life but still want to have fun and enjoy the things they did as a youth. I chosen to price my magazine at £5.00 an issue because I have researched what the average price of a weekly magazine is and based my price of of that.

Below is research to support my idea on genre's:
  • What constitutes as North London? What areas are included?
- Camden
- Hackney
- Finchley
- Whetstone
- Barnet
- Westminster
- Enfield
- Hackney
- Islington
  • What music venues are within those areas?
Camden:

- KOKO
- Jazz cafe
- Dingwalls
- Roundhouse
- O2 Forum

Hackney:

- GOAT music
- Birthdays
- Moth club
  • What music artists (genres) are playing there?
- Jazz
- Hip hip
- R & B
- Soul
- DJ's

Strengths and Weaknesses:

Conclusion:

My final idea is idea 3. I will be creating a magazine on venues specifically focusing on 'open mic nights' in North London. Overall I want to make my magazine interactive and appealing to a wide target audience. I want it to have an online and a hard back copy so I am reaching a wider audience. The younger generation will find it more beneficial to have a copy on the Internet/social media which they can access anywhere, where as the older generation will appreciate a hardback copy more as they may find it easy to read and more enjoyable. My ideas link to the client brief because they are based in North London in a vibrant setting where music is a big thing. It features a wide range of talent in different style of venues.
